Firefighters were called at 2.40pm to 18878 Erieau Rd. Crews from Station 14 Erieau, Station 18 Blenheim and Station 16 Raleigh South responded while an oil tanker from Station 12 Harwich North was also present.

When crews arrived at the two-story house, the fire was visible through the lower windows and doors.

“High winds pushed the fire into the attic and firefighters were called out of the structure into a defensive attack position just before the flames broke through the roof,” officials said.

An excavator was then brought in to “help put out the deep fire” and pull down the remains of the partially collapsed structure.

“The sole occupant who was in the home at the time of the fire was able to escape the home safely with two dogs, but reported that another dog and a pet rabbit were still in the home and unfortunately perished in the fire,” officials added.

The cause was listed as undetermined. Firefighters thanked the community for their support, including bringing food and cold water to crews while they were on the scene.
