Atom RPG: post-apocalyptic indie game review

No you haven’t gone a little crazy Atom RPG: post-apocalyptic indie game is actually the full title of Atom RPG. As a descriptive title, it certainly works. From an independent development studio called Atom Team, this game is an RPG set in Russia, very much based on classic CRPGs, such as Wasteland and the first two Fallout games – before they get too big for their boots and become all 3D and fancy. So, comrade, are we going to the desert?

The story of Atom RPG is usual for these games: The world was destroyed in a nuclear holocaust in 1986, and luckily (or not, depending on your point of view) we survived. We are cadets in a military school, sent to the desert to find the trace of a missing military mission. And that’s the whole setup – we’re given a place to go, and the rest of the investigation is up to us. We need to talk to people, take on side missions, fight evil creatures and evil people, and generally stay alive …

Now I have to put my hand up here and say that I really enjoy an RPG, JRPG, CRPG or whatever. So Atom RPG is already on a good wicket. Right away we’re thrown into the character generator, and my god is it detailed. You have a series of points, as is tradition, to allocate to different stats, such as strength, endurance, dexterity, etc. If you’ve played these types of games before, you’ll know that you can create a variety of characters from these seven basic settings, whether it’s a Neanderthal man dragging very high force or a clumsy scientist type with great intelligence. Obviously, the way you build your character affects what you can do in the game, and so those choices matter.

There is also a series of skills that you can assign a different group of points to, putting points into melee combat or guns, stealth or lockpicking, etc. I’m going to share a great tip here: In the early parts of the game, guns are at a premium, so I would focus on melee combat. As an example, a first mission sees a grateful farmer giving you a shotgun for helping him, and in the many hours since that point where I played, I found precisely four shells for it. . I’m glad I made my guy a sniper.

So after you’ve created your character, this is where you jump in to see what you can find. First impressions are that the Atom RPG looks and moves well, keeping that kind of old-fashioned look and feel. The graphics won’t make any Xbox Series X sweat, but that’s not really the point; these games are more about the experience than about blowing you up with dazzling graphics deception. The game is presented in a sort of isometric view, but you can move the camera around the screen to get the best view of the area you’re in, and also zoom in and out to some extent.

The retro feel carries over into the dialogue, especially with any NPCs you meet; many of them have multiple dialog trees to follow through to the end. There are also a fair amount of controls done during conversation, such as Speechcraft, Strength, etc. If you pass these checks, you may get different results. A good example is again in the first town, where the big boss asks you to find a mole who gives information to the local bandits. With a little, light cunning, you can get the mole to reveal itself and thus move the story forward.

Atom RPG is split into two areas – two areas if you will. There’s the world map, where you can walk around and find new places to explore, and then there’s the places themselves. The world map has a very minimal appearance, and random encounters – both good and bad variety – are relatively common. You may meet cool people on the road, but you may also meet a bunch of bloodthirsty bandits, so it’s best to rub your lucky bunny’s paw before you go.

The locations you can find on the world map are also a mixed group, ranging from a small area around a wrecked truck to a large city, teeming with life. Talking to people, helping them, exploring, recruiting companions – all of these things happen in city type places. And, as I discovered the hard way, you have to take care of your companions, as if they were dying, they are dead for good!

That brings me neatly to most of Atom RPG – combat. There is only one word to describe it: brutal. From the very first encounter, where you’re left for dead (I don’t know if it’s even possible to win the first fight, but that seems pretty impossible) to fighting anything bigger than an ant, the Combat difficulty is very at the “super hard” end of the scale. As for the giant spiders I found in a tunnel, well, it was an experience of retribution, because it turns out that tickling a spider as big as a Volkswagen Beetle with a knife doesn’t hurt it much. . I’ve died more often to things that would otherwise seem trivial encounters that I now treat every enemy like they’re going to kill me – mostly as often as they are. Obviously, leveling up, spending points to improve your skills makes it easier to stay alive, but it’s a bit of a Catch-22: you have to fight to get stronger, but fighting kills a lot, so there is a definite risk / reward mechanic going on here.

In conclusion then, Atom RPG is a brutal, punitive, but ultimately rewarding RPG that deserves to be played. It’s a huge game, with surprising depth, and while it may be too difficult for the casual player, sticking to it will see you turn into a card-bearing beast of the desert. It helps that the story is pretty good too.
