Tender Claws, the studio responsible for the sinister AI comedy Virtual Virtual Reality (which we’ve dubbed one of the best VR games), announced that he was working on a horror game related to Stranger Things. Based on the brief trailer, Stranger Things VR will be about exploring the Upside Down, meeting the monstrous inhabitants of this dimension, and waging a psychic battle with the series’ protagonists, all from the perspective of the big bad of season 4, Vecna.
Like all Stranger Things monsters, including the Demogorgon we see in the trailer, Vecna is named after a classic Dungeons & Dragons enemy. In this case, the lich archetype whose eye and hand became powerful artifacts after its death. (His head too, if you believe some tales (opens in a new tab).)
It was a good year for the Arch-Lich, who also featured in the first season of the Critical Role cartoon The Legend of Vox machina, where he was coyly referred to as The Whispered One.
According to Tender Claws Website (opens in a new tab), in Stranger Things VR, players will “become an explorer of unknown realities by training the hive mind and taming the void. Invade spirits and conjure up nightmares in your quest for revenge on Eleven and Hawkins.” Of course, this sounds like what Vecna was up to behind the scenes in Season 4. It’ll be interesting to see if that can make Vecna creepy, though Upside Down certainly looks as preposterous as ever.
Tender Claws describes Stranger Things VR as a “psychological action/horror game” and says it will “come to major VR platforms in winter 2023”.
A previous link called Stranger Things 3: The Game was removed from Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store last year, and Telltale Stranger Things Game was unfortunately canceled when the studio went bankrupt.
